Birthday Parties on the Farm & Special Events

We know kids and parents alike both have a great time at our Birthday Parties on the Farm but recently got our first, official (and un-solicited) review on Yelp. The mom talks about how she may have had as much fun as her daughter!
This last week, we also had a mom stop by to see more of our farm before scheduling her daughter's party...one of her concerns - and reasons she chose us - was that we didn't "decorate" the Fjords. I'm going to step on my soap box for a moment: Horses (and ponies) are living, breathing, emotional creatures. I'm not sure how the horses feel about being "dressed up" for parties on a regular basis, but from the photos I've seen, most do not look thrilled. Personally, as a horse person for over 30 years, I can't imagine doing this to them. We have dressed them with special bridles and even saddle pads. Way back in the day, we dressed up as Indians and put our handprints on our horse's behind, but to dye a horses hair pink, I don't think so. Neither did the mom that stopped by. OK, done with the soap box, thank you for listening :-)
Our parties are educational ... while some of the kids may be riding, the rest are off to see the chickens, pigs, rabbits or gardens...parents in tow! We have some fun, farm games we offer for different packages as well as a variety of available options to add on. Actually, we just got some beautiful, ceramic "garden" pots that we're going to package with soil and a plant to offer as a great goody bag present so you have one less thing to think about. We're working on putting together a package for the BBQ now ... We are also open to suggestions - if we can, we try to make it work.
For more information about our Farm Birthday Parties you can visit our website: Farm Parties
Recently we had a large group use the facility as an ending location for an "Amazing Race" type event - we were the end of the race! They had a large BBQ and we had 3 picnic tables as well as some other seating options. The guests were thrilled to see a real farm as the venue and loved getting to go visit with all the animals. Let us know if your company is looking for a venue for their fall BBQ. We'd love to help!

fall open barn

Well, we finally have our Fall Open Barn dates. Drum roll please ... October 16 & 17, 2010, 10am - 3pm daily. We will once again open our farm up to the public for this fun filled day on the farm.
This weekend is going to be B-I-G!!! Acclaimed Photography will be doing special family portrait sessions for your family with the Fjord horse of your choice OR anywhere on the grounds. Kids and parents alike will enjoy our fun craft area and Farmer Scott will be giving his mini version of our farm tour every few hours. Don't forget the hay maze! Yes, the trailer will be set up once again with a maze of hay ... over, under, crawl through and come out the other end - this one is SUPER FUN.  We'll have Bob's corn here for you to take home and enjoy. We're working on a few other attractions and activities that we can't share just yet, but will be posting them soon.

World's Best Pony

Many, many times we've heard and called Mina the "world's best pony". Here is another example of Miss Mina - the best of the best - being that amazing Norwegian Fjord!
Standing quietly as team on each side of her race to play the stickers game ... identify the correct body part on the sticker and place it on the horse. I stand back behind to help reassure her, but as you can see, Mina is truly amazing!!
Way to go World's Best Pony!

Diversified Micro Farm - huh?

We always seem to stubble a bit when explaining our farm and what we do. Over a long weekend a couple months ago, it really became cemented into our brains that we are a Diversified, Micro-Farm and that is exactly what we now share with people.

But what really does that mean? Well, let me share with you what we have developed so far ...

Willows Edge Farm is a Diversified Micro-Farm.

We have many that ask what that really means, so here is our brief description.

Diversified – variety. Having a diverse farm means having a variety of things that we raise and produce. We have our regular stock that we run each year (numbers will vary), but will vary our produce from year to year, based our own families interests and preferences.

Micro Farm – a very small farm. We have 2.25 acres and on that small piece raise our horses, which offer limited breeding stock, chickens that provide both eggs and meat, pigs that produce meat and a variety of garden areas that produce enough food for our pantry as well as sales. Most importantly is the method in which we do all of this … with thought and care for our animals and the environment. We have set aside areas for natural growth as well.

Why we Raise, What we Raise.

We raise Norwegian Fjord horses because of a life long love affair with horses and found the Fjords to be the perfect horse for everything (except racing). They are short and stocky, so most adults can ride them right along-side the children. They have a gentleness that is second to no horse.

We added in chickens to our farm in 1997 for a desire to become more self sustainable by producing our own eggs. In 2009, we decided we needed to raise our own meat birds after watching Food, Inc. If you haven’t seen it, watch and then you will know why easily made this decision.

2010 we knew we wanted to raise another meat animal, but all we had thought about were cows. Grandma Karen reminded us that her father’s family raised pork. There it was, our small, short to market meat animal. We are doing a test run on two pigs for this year and all indications are showing that the pigs are here to stay.

Vegetable/herb gardens have been around our farm since day one. There are some herbs that are easier to grow than others and vegetables, well, who doesn’t want more, truly fresh and local food.

One of our goals is to show everyone, yes EVERYONE, that they can take a piece of our diversified, micro farm home and create a little space of their own.
